Event Information

Autism and Older Adults – implications for mental health services

In this presentation some of the key issues relating to working with older autistic adults within mental health services will be discussed including the challenge around diagnosis and some presentations (including dementia) and how we ensure that services are accessible for this group of people.

They key learning objectives are:

  1. Increased understanding of autism and its impact within the older adult population.
  2. Increased awareness of the role of reasonable adjustments to ensure autism informed mental health services for older adults.

Dr Elspeth Webb – Trustwide Autism Clinical Lead (Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust)

Elspeth is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and a Systemic Psychotherapist. She has worked within the NHS across a variety of specialties for over 25 years with extensive experience of both autism diagnosis across all age groups and working therapeutically with autistic adults, young people and children.

Elspeth is part of a Trustwide Autism Service which works with all clinical and corporate services across our Trust to ensure that any autistic individual accessing any of our services receives autism informed, reasonably adjusted support. They work with and alongside clinicians and also at a strategic level.

She is also involved both regionally and nationally in a variety of initiatives relating to both autism diagnosis and the delivery of autism informed mental health care.
