Physician Associate Review meeting summaries

You will see below agendas and agreements from each of the Physician Associate Review Group meetings.

Agendas will be available in advance of meetings and updated with agreements following meetings.

The Agenda for the meeting included:

  • review of membership of the PA review group
  • communication to members
  • GMC consultation discussion.

The summary of agreements from the meeting:

  • Agreement on future communications regarding the PA review – publishing agendas and meeting summaries on the PA review page of the website.
  • Agreement to produce a table of concerns or FAQ to address directly concerns raised by PTC and junior doctors.
  • Agreement to produce a communication to the Physician Associate in Mental Health network.
  • Agreement to respond to the GMC consultation .
  • Agreement that concerns regarding supervisor capacity would be addressed in a future meeting.

  • Agreement to finalise and submit responses to the to the GMC consultation . 
  • Agreement to address key concerns from trainees and SAS doctors in a letter to the GMC and NHS-E.
  • Agreement to create Interim Guidance on Physician Associates working in Mental Health.
  • Agreement to collect examples and case studies on experiences with Physician Associates from trainees, SAS doctors and patients to help inform the review.

  • Mental Health Competence Framework – for review in order to consider scope of practice 
  • interim recommendations
  • PTC trainee and SAS concerns
  • invitations to stakeholders – how we will engage key stakeholders.

The summary of agreements from the meeting:

  • Agreement to finalise the Interim Guidance on Physician Associates working in Mental Health.
  • Agreement to invite stakeholders to future meetings including HEiW, NES, NIMDTA, RCGP, RCPCH, RCEM. 
  • Agreement to centralise the final scope of practice guidance with all royal colleges and national guidance. 
  • Agreement to collect more specific examples and case studies from SAS doctors and trainees to capture in the final report.

The summary of agreements for the meeting:

  • Agreement to collect feedback and comments received from the interim guidance on Physician Associates working in Mental Health for discussion in review Group.
  • Agreement to collect information on internships, inceptorships and preceptorship programmes for Physician Associates. 
  • Agreement to outline the role of each healthcare professional in the MDT and how this differs to a Physician Associates working in psychiatry. 
  • Agreement to work with NHS-E on discussing PA's scope of practice in a workshop. 

The Agenda for the meeting included:

  • feedback and comments on the RCPsych Interim guidance on Physician Associates working in mental health 
  • NHS-E Review on Physician Associates  
  • Medical Associate Professions (MAPs).  

Summary of the meeting:

  • The group shared the comments and feedback received from the RCPsych Interim guidance on Physician Associates working in mental health.
  • Agreement to attend the NHS-E workshop on Physician Associates working in mental health.
  • Discussion on the roles and responsibilities of national bodies and organisations in supporting the safe and effective integration of MAPs into the MDT.
  • Agreement to collect information on different PA internships, Inceptorship, and Preceptorship programmes.? 

The Agenda for the meeting included:

  • Council Update
  • NHS-E Workshop 
  • The role and contributions of healthcare professionals in MDTs in Psychiatry
  • PA internship, Inceptorship, and Preceptorship programmes 

Summary of the meeting:

  • The group discussed the Council’s response to the interim guidance for employers.
  • Evidence of existing internship, Inceptorship, and Preceptorship programmes for Physician Associates across the UK.
  • Agreement to begin drafting a report for the final guidance.

The Agenda for the meeting included:

  • Feedback from the Residents Doctors’ Committee 
  • Leng review discussion 
  • Feedback from stakeholder meeting: Research on PAs, Dr Paul Tiffin 
  • Feedback from stakeholder meeting: AOMRC Resident Doctors' Committee 
  • Final guidance discussion 

The Group discussed:

  • Feedback from Resident Doctors at ETC and the PRDC meeting.
  • The Leng Review, including the newsletter updates.
  • Feedback from stakeholder meetings, including the AOMRC Resident Doctors' Committee, and discussions around current research on PAs from Dr Paul Tiffin.
  • Whether the task and finish group should produce a scope of practice for PAs.
  • The timeline of the final guidance, with agreement to submit the guidance to ETC and Council in July
  • The content of the final report, including supervision, job descriptions, preceptorships and evidence of PAs working in Psychiatry.
