Autism Spectrum Webinar Series, Session 1 - ASD and CAMHS

Event Information

Our speaker for this session is Dr Mayank Gupta, Medical Director, Southwood Children Behavioural Health.

Dr Gupta will discuss Advanced Perspectives on Autism Spectrum: In-Depth Analysis of Diagnostics, co-occuring challenges and Evidence-Based Emerging Therapeutic Models.

This session will explore the growing prevalence of autism and the critical challenges associated with its diagnosis, co-occurring conditions, and therapeutic interventions. Participants will delve into emerging empirical data addressing the validity and limitations of current diagnostic tools, as well as the complexities posed by overlapping conditions and elevated risks of suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

The discussion will further examine controversies surrounding psychosocial interventions, including applied behaviour analysis, within neurodiversity and social norms. By deliberating on these multifaceted issues, this session aims to equip psychiatrists working with children and adolescents, and allied clinicians, a deeper understanding of ASD's evolving phenotypes and actionable therapeutic strategies.

What will you learn?

  • Examine the validity and limitations of current diagnostic tools and the barriers preventing accurate identification of individuals who are autistic.
  • To understand the prevalence of co-occurring conditions and risks associated with suicidal ideation while discussing strategies for early recognition and intervention.
  • Review evidence-based therapies and their sequencing to optimize outcomes while debating the role of psychosocial interventions like applied behaviour analysis within the context of neurodiversity and societal norms.
