Event Information
Overview
The ECT Annual Training Day 2025 is primarily aimed at consultants, residents in higher training and SAS doctors from all psychiatric subspecialties, who wish to enhance their working knowledge of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Residents in core training in psychiatry and other resident doctors are also welcome to attend, although the next planned Training Day, in spring 2026, will be preferentially aimed at residents in core training.

How will the event work online?
This event will be taking place online via a platform called EventsAir. Registered participants will receive their link to join the conference in their joining instructions. Joining instructions will be sent out in the days before the conference is due to take place.
When you join the conference online you will be able to:
- view a video of the speaker alongside any slides
- ask your questions to the speakers and chat with other delegates via the discussion forum.
All registered participants will also have access to this conference recording until 20 August 2025 (12 weeks).
About the speakers
Professor George Kirov, Cardiff University
Professor Kirov trained in Psychiatry in South-West London, starting 1990 developing an interest in psychiatric genetics during in his first research post with Professor Robin Murray at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. This was followed by a Wellcome Trust Fellowship in Cardiff with Professor Michael Owen, on the genetics of bipolar affective disorder. Professor Kirov stayed in Cardiff and extended research into schizophrenia. Professor Kirov's most important contribution to the genetics research is elucidating the role of copy number variation (CNV) in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Professor Kirov's interest in ECT started during a trial of Magnetic Seizure Therapy. He continued working in the ECT department in Cardiff where he became ECT Lead. Professor Kirov has conducted research on cognitive performance after ECT and have started a pilot study on functional neuroimaging of ECT. He is a member of the ECT Committee of the Royal College and recently he has written a book on ECT.
Dr Richard Braithwaite, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
Dr Rich Braithwaite is Lead Consultant Psychiatrist in Neuromodulation at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He gained an interest in ECT at medical school and currently chairs the UK 免费黑料网' Committee for ECT & Related Treatments and sits on the ECTAS Advisory Group
Professor Julie Langan Martin, University of Glasgow and NHS Ayrshire and Arran
Professor Julie Langan Martin Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Glasgow. She is Chair of the Scottish ECT Audit Network (SEAN) and is an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. She is Director of Education within the School of Health and Wellbeing (SHW) and leads on on-campus and online distance learning Masters in Global Mental Health.
Professor Declan McLoughlin, Trinity College Dublin
Declan M McLoughlin PhD MRCPI MRCPsych FTCD is Research Professor of Psychiatry in St Patrick's University Hospital and Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He qualified from University College Dublin in 1986 and trained in general medicine and psychiatry in both Dublin and London. His research interests include brain stimulation techniques for neuropsychiatric disorders, treatment resistant depression, and molecular psychiatry
Mrs Jan Jiles, Patient Rep, ECTAS, 免费黑料网
Jan joined the College as a patient rep working on ECTAS in April 2024. From September 1990 until March 2024 Jan worked in the NHS in a variety of management roles in hospitals and commissioning organisations. Her career included 8 years as Head of Primary Care in Huddersfield. Jan has had three episodes of mental health inpatient admission - in 1989, 1999 and 2016-17. It was in 2017 that Jan received a course of ECT.
