Professor Melanie Abas
Professor of Global Mental Health at King’s College London
Melanie Amna Abas is Professor of Global Mental Health at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, Director of the King’s Global Health Institute, and Consultant Psychiatrist, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She is known for research which built conclusive evidence that a low-cost talking therapy, the ‘Friendship Bench’, originating from Zimbabwe, significantly reduces depression. This African innovation has improved mental health for individuals and communities globally, including in high-income countries. Melanie is also recognised for research enabling better health support for UK survivors of human trafficking, and for supporting career progression in groups traditionally under-represented in academia.
